Chef Gustav is a short ‘stop motion’ animated comedy. A confrontation between a haughty chef in a refined restaurant and a cat quickly escalates into a slapstick battle across the kitchen, displaying ever increasing levels of gory and comical violence.

The director Luke Frangescou was clear from the outset that he did not want the film scored as a traditional animation, preferring to avoid the closely synced writing style which uses hit points to highlight the action. Instead, he wanted a score which would create an overall sense of the setting in a high end French restaurant, but still highlight the comedy. The use of gypsy and big band swing was ideal, as the light hearted and energetic feel played against the over-the top violence in the film, helping to bring out the humour in an otherwise bloodthirsty story!
